Sunshine at the Dogathon 2016

We at MADRA would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who came and supported our annual Dogathon on Sunday. With the sunshine on our side the event was a great success and thanks to the wonderful turn out we beat our target of ‘1,000 paws on the prom’ with a whopping 1,039 paws stepping out including 3-legged participant Jimmy Carter!

We were also very close to reaching our 10k target and would like to thank all our wonderful walkers, fundraisers and sponsors for helping us raise funds for the abandoned and unwanted dogs in need of our help. A massive thank you to all volunteers and bakers and to ‘Soopa’ for sponsoring us some yummy, healthy dog treats for our goody bags. Thanks also to Galway City Council for sponsoring the reusable bags and the pooper scoopers, to Bubbles and Barks for the lovely bags of dog treats they supplied and to Aoife and Poppy for taking on the job of filling all of the bags.

The title of ‘Grand Canine Marshall 2016’ was given to our fantastic little supporter Toby who managed to raise a whopping €900 with help from his owner Mary Crowe, he is pictured above proudly receiving his award. Lily and Bella and their owner Noreen O’Connor were our Runners-Up who raised a brilliant €280!

Before the walk we had a gathering of greyhounds and their owners for a photo opp to help raise awareness of the terrible issue of Irish greyhounds being exported to China’s only legal greyhound track, where it is reported that more than 30 greyhounds die each month. This is something we at MADRA feel very strongly about and it was great to have the public get behind us and help us highlight the issue.

Thanks again to all our supporters, we hope you had a wonderful Dogathon and hope to see you all again next year!

'Raise the Wuff' for MADRA

The MADRA kennels are being upgraded and we need your help!

Building work will soon be getting under way at the MADRA kennels in Camus, Connemara.  We plan to significantly upgrade our facility and these plans include a whole new roof, new windows and doors and new raised beds for the dogs. The new outer corridors will marginally increase capacity and make the kennel environment more comfortable for all concerned. Improvements will also be made to the floor and walls which will be heavily insulated, and painted with special easy-to-clean, anti-bacterial surface paint.

The revamped kennels will provide a fantastic space to house the dogs which come into our care and will allow us to rescue and rehome even more dogs in need of our help. Developing the facilities will also allow us to improve our outreach programmes in the community, and enhance the experience for our staff, volunteers and visitors.

We at MADRA are really excited about the big build and want you to be part of it. With projected costs for the development in the region of €60,000 we need as many people as possible to come on board and help us ‘Raise the Wuff’ and bring in vital funds for our canine residents.

Would you like to support MADRA and leave your very own lasting legacy at our new kennel facility? Perhaps you’d like to commemorate a special person or pet or give someone you love a gift for posterity?
