MADRA RT @CTribune: Dog lovers of Galway take to the Prom for @MADRADogRescue charity https://t.co/kfVvdL9HYp
All dogs are uniquely special but there is something particularly special about my stunning foster boy, “Tricky” Sam. He has been in the care of MADRA for 13 months. He arrived as one of our 23 completely unsocialised family of “Tricky” dogs who were rescued from a hoarding situation in 2016.

After months at our kennels rehabilitating Sam has finally started to take treats from our hands and we finally heard him bark! It was like a light switch was suddenly switched on in his head. A huge part of Sam’s rehabilitation was the security of having other dogs around him in the yard. He copied their actions and it gave him a confidence we could never have imagined was waiting to be unleashed inside this boy. Sam has since moved to a temporary foster home and months on, Sam is adjusting to home life better than we could have ever anticipated!

Sam needs a very special person to adopt him, someone who will understand his past and the unbelievable progress he has made in the last few months. It is important to point out that he is still a “special needs” dog. He lacked physical and mental stimulation in his past life and there's no denying that has had an impact on his development. He is very drawn to women but is nervous of men, having no experience of men in his previous life. The Sam I now walk is a confident, happy dog and his tail wags nonstop but he panics when his foster dad tries to walk him and Sam runs away from him if he tries to put his harness on him. However, Sam will sleep on the bed next to him and take treats from him but he is always wary. He will jump up on the couch next to him so I think he will be fine in time living with a man but it will take patience, encouragement and lots of treats.
