We would like to send a big warm thank you to Jessie Lendennie of Salmon publishing who has brought out a fantastic anthology of poetry which highlights and examines the canine world and our place in it. This is a simply amazing book with contributions from so many great poets that its hard to pick out any one individual. My own particular favourite poem is "Widow and Dog " by Maxine Kumin, although I still have so many more to read. If you want to capture the essence of dogs in the written word then this is the best place to start.
As well as donating some of the royalties from the book to MADRA, Jessie has given us some books to sell here on our website or you will also be able to purchase them at our Canine Carnival fundraiser in St Brigit's Garden on the 11th September.
We are very lucky that one of the featured poets, Pete Mullineaux, will also be there on the day reading from the book and signing the books that will be for sale.
ANIMAL MEMORY by Laurelyn Whitt
A dog
black, lop-eared and wary
fills the shelter with her waiting.
Someone enters one day, or does not,
looks deep into shadows,
or away.
Her bruised body trembles,
a hesitant tail thumps
eyes haunt impossible futures.
When the door shuts
it is much too late:
longing spills from the cage
pours through cracked windows
down the streets among us.
Without expectations.
