WE NEED YOUR HELP. Please read our appeal and give what you can to help the dogs that are currently waiting in the pound.

Urgent Appeal: We in rescue are often asked what is the worst part of what we do. Of course everyone assumes the answer to be along the lines of lamenting the plight of the many starving, abandoned dogs tied to the gate post at various times. Or the use and abuse of the puppy farm breeding bitches; or maybe the loyal family friend sent to the pound simply because he is now too old and smelly. The list in fact could be endless but no, actually it's none of these. Why? Well, because in some ways, even if it's only for a moment, we can and do bring love and care to such dogs.

The worst part of our job is, without a doubt, having to turn a dog away because we cannot afford to take them in. To look into their sad, pleading eyes at the pound and have to say "No". To think that because our pre-Christmas finances are so low this poor dog may not get their much deserved second chance at happiness; that we have failed these dogs by not working hard enough to raise money because we got so bogged down with the day-to-day running of MADRA.

We try desperately to avoid this happening; we run fundraisers, we have flag days, we have cake sales, we print calendars. All in an effort to give you something back in return for the funds you give to us. The funds that have helped us bring the PTS rate down by a further 4%, bringing the number of dogs being euthanized in Co. Galway down to 14%. Considering that this figure was close to 80% just 8 years ago this is something that MADRA can be very proud of and you, our supporters, have helped us to achieve this. In Co. Mayo we have brought the PTS rate down to 11% - a drop of almost 70% from 5 years ago.

Recently people have said to us that MADRA seems self-sufficient. Although we do try our best to keep a constant source of income coming in through our shops, fundraisers and other initiatives, unfortunately this simply is not always enough. Sometimes we are hit with such a barrage of illness and injury in the kennels that we must ask for more financial help from you.  We have, at the moment, several long-term project dogs and bills from our ever patient vets that need to be paid before the end of year.

Skipper is a fantastic beagle boy of about 6 years old. The poor lad has kidney disease which requires special food which can be very expensive. Without this special food his poor body just wastes to skin and bone and he has no energy. Such a simple thing as a bag of good food keeps him well and healthy. Unfortunately, His special diet food costs about 4 times what it costs to feed a healthy dog. He is worth every penny though as he is such a sweet boy.

Wanda has been in long-term foster care where she has improved hugely with all the care she has received from Mary & Ciaran. She will always need  back up from MADRA and may never be rehabilitated enough to live her life as a full family member but just because she has had a rotten life before coming to MADRA, and is damaged as a result, is no reason to further punish her by failing her now.

Bibi was found lying in a ditch presumably the result of a road accident. She has extensive injuries which include a broken pelvis, two fractured hips and a squashed vertebra. She is lucky to have found a fabulous foster family who will nurse her through her recovery but her bills have reached €600 already with two different veterinary practices involved in her care.

Carrie had such a bad start and after surviving terrible pneumonia in the pound, she had a bad reaction to her vaccination and was temporarily blind. Thankfully she has regained her sight and has just gone to her forever home - she did, however, have quite high veterinary bills.

Riki is another road accident dog with a broken pelvis and bladder injuries which required surgery and long-term aftercare.

And sadly, as you our followers know, we never know what is around the corner for us. It could be another maltreated or injured dog, or it could be a pregnant dog who will deliver us with a litter of pups that will need extra special care.

We do everything we can for the dogs in our care. That means that due to the lack of funds in our account we will not be able to make our weekly trip to the pound until we get back on our feet and money in our coffers. Considering that these pounds don't rehome dogs directly, this is absolutely devastating for us, as these dogs are no less loving, loyal and deserving of a home than any of the other dogs that we have rescued this year..

It is unimaginable to think we may have to admit defeat this year which is why we are making this special appeal to you, our loyal and supportive followers, to help MADRA raise the €3,000 we need immediately by signing up for a €5 per month standing order or making a once-off donation via PayPal.
