Adults, children and much-loved dogs are invited to a Family Fun Day and Dog Show being held at St Finbars club at Southpark in the Claddagh this Sunday (May 26) from 1pm to 5pm. The fun-filled celebration will help raise money and awareness for the GRCC and MADRA. Dog owners are invited to bring along their cherished pooches and can put them through their paces with a novelty dog show, with many categories for children and their dogs too. There will also be plenty of entertainment for all the two-legged members of the family including a bouncy castle, kiddies disco, face painting and traditional games like three-legged races, egg and spoon races, and a parent's race. Dog Show categories including Golden Oldies, Best Trick, Dog with the Waggiest Tail, Best Dressed Dog, Child’s Best Friend, and Best Rescue Dog are some of the competitions that can be entered on the day. If the dog show isn’t for you, visitors of the human variety can enjoy browsing for bargains at the bric-a-brac stall, while little ones can get stuck into activities including face painting. There will also be raffles, a tombola, giant jenga and connect four, and a great selection of delicious refreshments on offer. Dog Control Statistics 2012

MADRA Press Release - April 4th, 2013

The recently published Department of the Environment Dog Control statistics for 2012 once again highlights the number of irresponsible and careless dog owners living in our community.

In county Galway a 23% increase in the number of dogs coming through the pound system was reported with an extra 65 dogs being taken in, bringing the total number to 417 - in county Mayo there was an 11% increase.

MADRA works with both local authorities and has helped to reduce the put to sleep (PTS) rate in both counties. Since 2005 the county Galway PTS rate has fallen from 83% to 14%.  Similarly in county Mayo MADRA has helped the Council to reduce its put to sleep rate from 72% in 2008 to 11% in 2012.
